Duke
April 17 - Duke
Location - Love Auditorium in the LSRC
Time - 7:00-9:00
Speaking - Stuart Pimm, 11th Hour Expert; Richard Dent, co-Director of 11th Hour Action
The screening at Duke University was incredible and holds as one of our proudest stops on the 11th Hour Campus Tour. Held in Love Auditorium, the screening was attended by over 200 students. Nearly every student stayed for the panel discussion following the screening. Among the students attending the event were students from Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, and Duke student organizations represented were Students for Sustainable Living, Duke Environmental Alliance, and the Duke University Greening Initiative.
Before the screening, Anna Mazhirov of Students for Sustainable Living introduced Richard Dent, co-Director of 11th Hour Action. Richard spoke briefly, describing how the film came to fruition, the ideas behind the 11th Hour Action campaign and www.11thhouraction.com, Hewlett Packard’s sponsorship of the 11th Hour Campus Tour and the steps that Hewlett Packard is taking to be environmentally conscious.
The great turnout was undoubtedly influenced by Stuart Pimm, 11th Hour expert and Doris Duke Professor of Conservation Ecology at Duke University. Stuart spoke on the Q&A panel following the screening alongside Tavey McDaniel, Environmental Sustainability Coordinator for Duke University, and Richard Dent. The audience asked a number of questions, including how students could take environmental action on campus, and what the Duke administration was doing to make campus operations more sustainable. [Need Stuart quotes and more info on questions.]
Various students signed up to www.11thhouraction.com using the Hewlett Packard laptops after the event.
Duke University is already a frontrunner in terms of campus greening initiatives. The Duke University administration adopted the Duke University Environmental Policy on March 1, 2005, committing the university to leadership in environmental research and education, environmentally responsible operations and environmental stewardship in the community. Pursuant to the policy, Duke has made strong commitments to green building, sustainable dining practices, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, energy conservation, purchase of clean and renewable energy, ecological preservation, development and distribution of environmentally preferable products, progressive transportation planning, waste reduction and efficient water management.
The event was announced by Duke’s student radio station WXDU.
