The 11th Hour Campus Tour - Georgetown

The 11th Hour screening at Georgetown University’s New Research Building Auditorium was attended by over 100 (mostly graduate) students. Several professors and members of the local Georgetown community also attended. Despite a few technical glitches (which we then knew to avoid at the subsequent screenings), the event started on time and the film was met with enthusiasm by the students that attended.

Edward Barrows, Professor of Biology and Director of the Georgetown University Center for the Environment, made introductory remarks. Stephan McGuire, co-Producer of The 11th Hour, then gave the assembled students some background on the making of The 11th Hour, the focus of the 11th Hour Action campaign, and Hewlett Packard’s involvement with the 11th Hour Campus Tour.

We were very happy that two of our 11th Hour experts were able to attend the Georgetown screening and participate in the Q&A. James Woolsey is currently Vice President of Booz Allen Hamilton, a global strategy and technology consulting firm, and served as Director of the CIA from February 1993 to January 1995. Betsy Taylor is the founder of the Center for a New American Dream, a non-profit organization that helps Americans resist excessive commercialism and consume wisely to protect the environment, improve quality of life and enhance social justice. She is also the founder of 1Sky, a non-profit organization dedicated to focusing Americans on achieving bold federal action by 2010 that can reverse global warming. Stephan McGuire, co-Producer of The 11th Hour, also answered audience questions during the Q&A. As both James Woolsey and Betsy Taylor are involved in the development of government policy, most of the questions posed by students concerned the extent to which the U.S. Government has addressed the environmental crisis. James Woolsey in particular emphasized the urgency of environmental action by the U.S. government on a large-scale basis.

After the screening, students had the opportunity to review 11th Hour Action materials. Several students signed up to www.11thhouraction.com using the Hewlett Packard laptops. Representatives from 1Sky and from Honest Tea, a manufacturer of organic iced tea drinks committed to social responsibility, were also present and shared informational materials with students.

Georgetown University’s student-led Sustainability Committee is taking action by meeting with members of the Georgetown administration with a view to greening the campus by developing better recycling programs, reducing energy consumption, promoting green buildings and saving water and natural resources.
