The 11th Hour Campus Tour - MIT

DATE: March 6 – MIT (Boston, MA)
TIME: 7-9 PM
LOCATION: Room 110, Building 26 MIT Campus
SPEAKING: Speaking: Stephan McGuire, co-Producer of The 11th Hour

Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Thursday, March 6

The MIT screening (held at a large lecture room in Building 26) was hosted by MIT’s Environmental Coalition and attended by over 100 students. Students gathered for pizza and coffee before the event, which made for a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Steve Maffetone of Hewlett Packard also attended the event.

Before the screening, Ariel Esposito, President of MIT’s Environmental Coalition, introduced Stephan McGuire, co-Producer of The 11th Hour.  Stephan spoke briefly, describing how the film came to fruition, the ideas behind the 11th Hour Action campaign and www.11thhouraction.com, Hewlett Packard’s sponsorship of the 11th Hour Campus Tour and the steps that Hewlett Packard is taking to be environmentally conscious.

After the screening, Stephan McGuire answered audience questions. Topics ranged from what MIT can do to take action more directly to the ways students can individually live more sustainable lives.

Various students signed up to www.11thhouraction.com using the Hewlett Packard laptops after the event.

MIT is taking action through the MIT Dorm Electricity Competition, which will run from March 10 to May 4, 2008 and was launched by the MIT Energy Club. MIT is one of the largest energy consumers in Massachusetts, and MIT President Susan Hockfield has recently stated that MIT must begin to “walk the talk” and set an example for other universities and communities across the country. The MIT Energy Club aims to involve as many students as possible in the energy use cut back initiative, and in connection with the MIT Dorm Electricity Competition will give $10,000 in energy efficient retrofits (including new lighting and showerheads) to the dorm that reduces its energy use per student the most during the competition period.
