Leonardo DiCaprio's "The 11th Hour" is a documentary concerning the environmental crises caused by human actions and calls for restorative action through a reshaping of human activity.
The mission of our community is to inspire action at every level: from
individual action, up through our communities, to the state, national
and international level. The actions are all shifting our civilization
to a sustainable future. Let's work and take action together. The time is now. The hope is you. Let's begin.
That’s GREAT News Shynney. I hope you get a terrific turnout.
I still enjoy reading all your posts on IMDb. I commend you on your tenaciousness with all those global warming deniers over there. You keep giving them HELL.
thanks for this Shynney,
I picked up on a positive statement at the end of the preview.. something about the new generation having a great opportunity to make a real change and so wasnt suprised, but also pleased at your response. I had wanted to talk to the local schools about The Inconvenient Truth but also felt that the fear it gave across was better channelled at the adults of the world to push them into making real changes. So this movie sounds like its a must for our children, to give them a feeling that they have a real purpose and also be optimistic. It would be a shame if in 50 years the world was many steps closer because the adults of the day couldnt cope with the responsibilities laid on them and were all unable to cope and in therapy because of it...
Crazyoval although the 11th Hour covers a lot of the same ground as Al Gore's film it is presented in a very different format. Parts of it are quite beautiful. It is not just one person lecturing on the subject there are a variety of scientists and people from many walks of life presenting facts about Climate Change. The ending builds from one positive step we can take to another and leaves you with a feeling that you can make a difference and you can do somethings to help. Think it would definitely be a more positive film to be shown to schools than the rather dry and slightly disturbing An Inconvenient Truth. The 11th Hour covers all the scarey facts but leaves on positive note that we can work together on this problem.
Think its February in the UK. Will definitely try and see it again. Need that positive feeling again.
HI Shynney,
Im going to wait until the film comes to my local cinema so I will be waiting quite a while here in the UK.
Im wondering, what does this film achieve further than Gore's Inconvenient Truth ? have you any thoughts?
Just an update on our efforts. 2007 definitely was not a year for solar panels as we had so little sun but on the days the sun shone they were a real benefit and supplied all our hot water. Sure we will have sunnier years to come.
Our woodburning stove is a great success and supplies all our hot water needs every day with winter coming on plus our central heating and is a wonderful warm, glowing heart to our house. The dogs love curling up in front of it. Our wood supply seems endless so there is no problem there in this heavily wooded area we live in.
The vegetable garden has provided us with all our winter needs in the freezer plus we are still getting lots of fresh winter vegetables every day. We feel healthier and fitter for making the effort. We have plans to enlarge the fruit growing area of our plots in the community allotment so I can make more jam and we can have more fresh fruit. Started making chutneys again this year. Its been long time since I did that but must make more next year. Really adds flavour to the cooking.
Although we have cut our emissions a lot we are still connected to the grid for electricity for our appliances and lighting. The energy saving bulbs and turning off standbys has helped I am sure. We are about ten percent down on our use from last year. Suppose this is accounted for by the oil burner pump not running a lot during the winter. Wish we could become detached from the grid but our needs are too small to consider generating our own I think. If we could join forces with the other small houses in our terrace it would be viable. Just have to talk people into coming in with us for a small community wind generator maybe.
We have cut down the use of our car as much as possible. Using the train and bus wherever practical. Still need our car for collecting the wood from our supplier out in the forest once week though.
Next year will challenge us to do more and hope we will see more signs of progress from our community. Living in our rather remote position it is peopled by very self reliant people so am sure we will it won't be long before we are clubbing together to do more.
Now we are settled after a big move its lovely to have a little space to create a garden again and watch the birds appreciate it. There is such peace and calm to be found there and a favorite place to feel close to this planet.
Now the question is...will he run for president? www.draftgore.com just ran a full page ad in Wednesday's NY Times calling out to Al Gore to run for president.
Either way, this Nobel Peace Prize win will hopefully get the candidates addressing better what actions they will take with the environment and climate change.
Congratulations Shynney!
I am so happy to hear that you had a great turnout and the film was very well received.
Slowly we get closer to 10th of July and the showing of 11th Hour in Harlech. We have made a poster

We will take around all our local towns in the attempt to get a good turn out. At least we hope people will read it and think about it.
