Beginning

So, I have tried to contact people running for Congress (district 7 seat) to see if they know of any government grants or private grants that could help fund and begin our group.  I was thinking that we could start with just an old golf cart that hopefully Stetson would supply us with and then we would try to convert it to clean energy.  After completing this, we could transport students to and from classes at the arranged time, so they would not drive their gas guzzlers.

Please tell me what you all think,

Ryan Rogers

NEW SEARCH ENGINE SEEKS TO BUILD A GREEN FUTURE!

The first Flash Search Engine is an Environmental Search Engine!! http://www.greenplanetsearch.com is now live!

When Mike Haney first presented the idea behind the technology behind

www.greenplanetsearch.com, he was laughed down. Virtually, of course. “Everyone can

dream,: scoffed one, erroneously.

A few people were intrigued. The combination of Haney’s vision of a Flash-driven search

engine, and the plan to create a dazzling environmental education resource, eventually

attracted a loose-knit corps of collaborators, most of whom have never met in person first

among them Andre Roussille, a French computer programmer, and now part owner of the

company.

The upshot from this collaboration, apart from the stunningly beautiful homepage, is the

only people involved in the creation of the search engine, is that the only people involved

in the development devoted environmentalists, who genuinely wish to disseminate good

information to students and educators.

Later, through a similar serendipity, Mr. Haney teamed up with a veteran journalist who

agreed to lend his services to the site, building from scratch a source of environmental

news and policy analysis.

Advertisers will be strictly vetted by the companies shareholders, limited to companies

that are making a meaningful contribution the planet’s health.

The final result, which was launched this week, is the culminating of thousands of

hours of work, and more than a few false starts.

It boasts easily navigable information, experiments, lesson plans, presented in an interactive and graphically enhanced format,

and has an exclusive global climate change resource section for teachers and kids.

If you would like more information about greenplanetsearch.com, or to schedule an

interview with Mike Haney, please call Mike Haney at 305.531.3746   or e-mail info@greenplanetsearch.com.

Arizona State University Taps into Sun with a Huge Solar Project

The nation’s first School of Sustainability was established at Arizona State University. The university, along with the School of Sustainability at its core, has been mounting an unprecedented comprehensive sustainability effort aimed at finding solutions to the most pressing issues the planet faces, and is committed to guiding humanity from its present course of environmental destruction.

ASU is showing how to walk the talk with plans for installing one of the largest rooftop solar-power plants in the United States. The plan calls for 2 megawatts of generating capacity installed on 135,000 square feet by the end of the year.

That's enough to run 4,600 computers and reduce carbon emissions by 2,825 tons per year, or the equivalent of taking 530 cars off the road for a year. Long-term plans call for up to 7 megawatts of solar-generating capacity to be built at ASU in Tempe, with additional solar installations at its campuses in downtown Phoenix and other locations.

"These large-scale solar installations demonstrate ASU's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality through on-site, renewable-energy generation," ASU President Michael Crow said.

ASU is becoming a major player in solar research and sustainability. This is a real-world showcase of its efforts.

The Solar taxi team driven by Louise Palmer from Switzerland was in Malaysia March/April this year.  Solamas helped arrange talks with several local universities, colleges and schools.  Louise had been going around the world (22,000 km by the time he reached Kuala Lumpur) sharing about climate change and needed help arranging for venues and meetings when he came to Malaysia.  Solamas along with the Swiss Embassy helped arrange for talks at Murdoch University, Sri Aman secondary School, The German International School, University and University Technology Malaysia.

He has given a challenge to all these institutions to join him in his next endeavor, The Solar Wave where an entire FLEET of solar vehicles from various sectors will again do what he did.  Check out www.solartaxi.com for more details.

I Heart Tap Water Student Video Contest

It may be April Fool's Day, but don't be fooled about bottled water.

Students: Compete to win $1,500 with your YouTube video about why you are kicking the bottled water habit and taking back the tap.

This April 1 students from across the country are choosing not to be fooled by bottled water. Instead, they are entering our celebrity-judged "I Heart Tap Water" student video contest. Some of the judges include the actor Alec Baldwin (no joke!), two award-winning documentary filmmakers, an Emmy Award-nominated producer for National Geographic, and an Emmy Award-winning television producer.

As part of our countdown to the deadline for submission. Food & Water Watch produced "Don't Be Fooled By Bottled Water" starring our own celebrity staff, which ponders the question, "Will water filtered through rose petals fetch $8.00 per bottle?"

To see other videos and to get more information on the contest visit our new website at TakeBacktheTap.org. Remember there are only two weeks left in the "I Heart Tap Water" contest! Submissions for the contest will be accepted until 11:59 am EST on April 14, 2008, and the winner of the contest will be announced on Earth Day, April 22, 2008.

If your talents don't include YouTube video producing, you can help by spreading the word about the contest and about TakeBacktheTap.org.

Sincerely,

Your Advocates
at Food & Water Watch

The 11th Hour at UCLA!

(Above: Andy Lipkis, Leila Conners Petersen, Alisa Ahmadian, Nadia Conners, Matt Petersen, and J. Nichols)

As part of UCLA’s Focus the Nation event on Thursday, Jan. 31 (www.focusthenation.org), a couple of students organized to bring Leondaro diCaprios’ “The 11th Hour” to campus to culiminate the day of environmental panels, seminars and discussions. The students represented the UCLA Chancellor’s Sustainability Sub-Committee as well as the large, environmental student group E3-Ecology, Economy, Equity.

The film was screened in a large ballroom, and brought about 500 students to see the film. The highlight of the night was the panel discussion following the film, with co-directors Leila Conners-Petersen and Nadia Conners, as well as Matt Petersen (president of Global Green USA), Wallce J Nichols (head research scientist for the Ocean Conservancy) and Andy Lipkis (founder and president of Tree People.) It was a great experience for the students to ask experts featured in the film their personal questions involving how to get jobs in the environmental field, how the environment fits into politics, and how to use purchasing power responsibly.

Overall, it was a great event...hopefully the solutions mentioned in the film can translate into more students taking action on campus and beyond!
